Across the streets of the coaching hub of Kota, there is one common refrain among entrance exam aspirants, “hum to dummy hai (we are dummy students)”, uttered almost with pride.

It is not a reference to a dimwit, but “dummy schooling”, a way of education popular not just in Kota but across India in which students wishing to study for tough entrance exams enrol in regular schools for Class 11 and 12 studies but are exempted by the institutes from attending classes and internal assessments…
