In Madhya Pradesh, 3 Muslim Academics Face Criminal Cases Filed By Hindu Right, Backed By State Govt

Farhat Khan (L), PhD, an Indore law college principal and author of a book that was censored by its publisher after protests by Hindu right-wing groups against its criticism of such groups. She apologised but police, on orders from the Madhya Pradesh home minister, filed a criminal case against her. She is currently not working due to health issues and Inamur Rahman (R), PhD, former principal of a government law college in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was forced to resign in December 2022 for a book present in the college library. His arrest, based on Hindu right-wing complaints, was stopped by the Supreme Court, after his pleas for anticipatory bail were rejected by an Indore district court and the Indore High Court/ AKANSHA DESHMUKH

“The book was purchased in 2014. And he is sought to be arrested? Are you serious?”

That was the question Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud asked advocate Aljo K Joseph, state counsel for Madhya Pradesh, on the state’s dogged pursuit of Inamur Rahman PhD, who 43 days earlier had resigned as principal of the New Government Law College, Indore, over a book in the college library.
