Implicated Based on Witness Statements While Already in Custody, No Connection with Co-Conspirators: Imam in Delhi HC

Arguing for bail in the larger conspiracy case of the Northeast Delhi riots Thursday, student leader and activist Sharjeel Imam said he has been implicated in the case based on witness statements recorded while he was already in custody. He also submitted that he had no “connection” with any of the alleged co-conspirators and his public speeches repeatedly called for non-violence.

Imam and other accused, who have been in custody now for over four years, are facing allegations of pre-planned conspiracy to allegedly cause riots in northeast Delhi between February 23-25, 2020 with offences lodged under the IPC, Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 (UAPA).
