Ten-year Sentence for Professor Under Harsh Security Law

Former University of Hong Kong law professor Benny Tai has been sentenced to 10 years in jail under Hong Kong’s National Security Law. It is the longest of the sentences meted out to 45 Democrats – comprising former legislators, activists, academics and journalists – in a landmark High Court trial this week.

The sentences under the National Security Law (NSL) imposed on Hong Kong in 2020 by Beijing mostly ranged between four and seven years. Tai’s sentence stood out for being particularly harsh, on par with sentences meted out to dissidents in Mainland China, according to rights organisations…
