Reports of Army Call-up for Women Raises Fears for Students

Almost a year after Myanmar’s conscription law was enacted, forcing young men into barracks and triggering a hurried exodus of young people from the country, the military junta is reportedly now also targeting women, including those who are students, for military service.

In February 2024, the compulsory conscription law came into force stipulating that every Myanmar man aged 18-35 and woman aged 18-27 had to serve at least two years in the military or face imprisonment, a fine, or both…
