Opinion: Alberta's Bill 18 Spells the End of Academic Freedom

With the announcement of the Provincial Priorities Act in Alberta earlier this month, many of my colleagues and friends working in the province are wondering what their futures might look like in a world where grant eligibility cannot be confirmed without provincial approval.

As the first province to take jurisdiction over research to such extreme lengths, I thought it might be past time to reflect on just what this might mean for the research community — as well as the dangers of polluting our research integrity with political interest.
