Union education minister to head TISS Society, Tata Trusts to have 1 member

MUMBAI: The Union education minister will soon be the chairman of the new Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Society. The executive council of the premier institute, which will replace the governing board, will be chaired by the vice chancellor and will have four nominees of the education minister and academic representatives from TISS. Tata Trusts, which had two senior members on the governing board, will now have only one member in the society. TISS Society will facilitate the functioning of TISS, while the executive council will have the power of management and administration. The norms are in line with those of regulatory bodies in central universities. Last year, Centre had decided to bring all institutions that receive over 50% govt funds under its jurisdiction. TISS, a centrally funded deemed-to-be university, has, therefore, been brought under govt's ambit. The drafting of a new memorandum of agreement (MoA) had been pending for some time.
