UGC’s Flexible Degree Options Spark Concerns over Learning Depth and Their Implementation

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved flexible degree completion options for undergraduate programmes, which allow students to finish their degrees in less or more time than the standard three or four years. While the intent is to support students with flexible options, HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) may face several challenges related to its implementation.

One of the most significant challenges posed by the draft guideline is ensuring alignment between flexible degree pacing and critical milestones such as placement opportunities and postgraduate programme schedules. Experts have raised concerns over its fragmented learning structure, lack of global recognition, and potential impact on employability.
