Suspensions, Surveillance, and Silencing: Understanding the Student Crackdown at Jamia Millia

Jamia Millia Islamia has suspended 17 students for protesting on the campus. A few days ago, the university administration secretly handed over the protesting students to the police, and their whereabouts were not known for a few hours. They were separated from each other and taken to police stations far away from the campus. The police misbehaved with them, snatched their phones, and called their parents. The abduction and detention were totally illegal, but we already know that this is how the Delhi police operate.

Ultimately, the students were released from custody, but the university administration suspended them. Their photos and personal details were also made public. When there was an uproar over this, the administration denied responsibility and said it would investigate how it had happened and would take punitive action against those found responsible for it….
