Pune University denies permission to stage ‘Shivaji Underground in Bhimnagar Mohalla’ on campus

A university committee overseeing a four-day festival underway at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) declined students permission to stage a play entitled ‘Shivaji Underground in Bhimnagar Mohalla’.

A Shiv-Phule-Shahu-Ambedkar joint anniversary festival was at SPPU to celebrate the works and legacies of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, Shahu of Kolhapur and BR Ambedkar. The event was scheduled according to the birth anniversaries of anti-caste figures Phule and Ambedkar, beginning on April 11 for the former and concluding on April 14 for the latter.

While representatives of the university claimed the play was cancelled due to logistical and cost reasons, some students insist that the decision was taken under pressure from some external groups that did not agree with the content of the play…
