Himanta Escalates War with Muslim-owned University, Suggests Curbs on Assam Govt Jobs for its Students

Upping his attack on privately owned University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) Wednesday, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government is discussing the possibility of students who graduate from the varsity not being eligible to compete for posts advertised by the Assam government.

The USTM is a top 200 university under the NIRF, run by a foundation owned by Mahbubul Hoque – a Bengali-Muslim from Assam – who is also the Chancellor of the institute. This month, Hoque has been at the receiving end of several attacks from Sarma – ranging from accusations that he was responsible for flash floods in Guwahati because of deforestation and hill-cutting for construction of the campus, to saying that the architecture of the university’s main gate, which has three domes, is a sign of “jihad”…
