‘Ethically wrong’: JNUSU, ABVP Slam V-C for ‘Freeloaders’ Remark

24 April 2024 | The Indian Express

The Left-dominated JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the right-leaning Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) seem to have found common ground as they hit out at the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor over her recent remarks in which she called some students “freeloaders”.

While the JNUSU issued an open letter, accusing the V-C of having double standards, the ABVP called her statement an attempt to malign the reputation of the university.

In an interaction with PTI editors at the news agency’s office, JNU V-C Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit said she has issued strict instructions to the hostel administration not to allow any student to stay in hostels beyond five years. In response to a question on allegations of JNU having seen freeloaders stay on campus at the cost of taxpayer money, Pandit said, “You are absolutely right, we have a problem of freeloaders.”
