JNUSU Strongly Condemns The Abhorrent Islamophobic Remarks & Behaviour Perpetuated by a Group of First & Second-Year Students at the Centre for Historical Studies (CHS)

JNUSU | June 2024

TEXT

These individuals have taken to trolling and dehumanizing fellow students in the CHS Official group, creating a hostile and unsafe environment for Muslim and Dalit students.

On June 7th, Nishant and Abishek Rai made despicable comments mocking Islam and advocating for the genocide of Muslims. They shamelessly stated that one of Prime Minister Modi's shortcomings in his second term was not pursuing ethnic cleansing, a deeply offensive and dangerous assertion. Such rhetoric is not only Islamophobic but also incites violence and hatred. This group routinely labels students as Naxalites or jihadists in an attempt to discredit and marginalize them. These are the same individuals who have previously raised slogans in support of Brahmeshwar Mukhiya, a notorious figure associated with the massacre of Dalits in Bihar. Abishek Rai's mockery of the phrase "Allah hu Akbar," which means "God is great" in Islam, by distorting it to "olu hu uber" is another deliberate act of provocation and disrespect towards the Muslim community.

The actions of this group are meticulously planned and targeted, aiming to intimidate and harm Muslim and Dalit students. This behavior is not only a gross violation of the principles of equality and respect that our university stands for but also a direct attack on the unity and integrity of our student community.

JNUSU unequivocally condemns these Islamophobic and casteist actions. We call upon the university administration to take immediate and stringent action against those responsible. It is imperative that the university ensures a safe and inclusive environment for all students, free from hate and discrimination. JNUSU stands in solidarity with the affected students and urge the entire JNU community to come together to reject and resist such divisive and hateful ideologies. It is only through collective action and unwavering commitment to justice and equality that we can foster a truly inclusive and respectful academic environment.
